
Beckman finishes eighth at Midlands; three place at F&M Open

EVANSTON, Ill. – Senior Mason Beckman became a three-time place winner at the Midlands Championships with an eighth place finish at 133 as competition wrapped up for the two-time All-American Wednesday at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Beckman won his opening bout of the day to cement a place in the top eight before dropping two bouts to settle for eighth place.
On Tuesday, Beckman won two bouts by major decision before losing in sudden victory in the quarterfinals. In his first match Wednesday, Beckman won a 7-3 decision over Joey Palmer of Oregon State to guarantee a spot on the podium.
In the consolation quarterfinals, Beckman dropped a 7-6 decision to Dominick Malone of Northwestern, with a two-minute riding time advantage being the deciding factor. The loss dropped Beckman to the seventh place match, where he was beaten 11-3 by Iowa State's Earl Hall.
Beckman was competing in his fourth Midlands. He did not place as a true freshman in 2011 but finished fourth in 2012 and fifth in 2013.
Also on Wednesday, 11 Mountain Hawks competed at the David H. Lehman F&M Open, hosted by Franklin & Marshall in Lancaster, Pa. Freshman Gordon Wolf went 4-0 to claim the 174 pound title, leading the three Mountain Hawks who placed in the top four. In addition to Wolf, freshman Christian Colucci took second place at heavyweight and freshman Tom Murray placed third at 197.
The other eight Lehigh participants included sophomore Dean Somers (133), freshmen Camden Fischer and David Pipa (141), freshman Kent Lane (149), freshmen Paul Dunn, Charlie Sell and Chase Gallik (165) and freshman Andrew Price (174).
The Mountain Hawks will have 16 wrestlers (15 attached, one unattached) competing at the Southern Scuffle, beginning Friday at 9 a.m. in Chattanooga, Tenn.
