Bennett named Rookie of the Week as Lehigh readies for Tuesday match at Villanova

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh freshman middle blocker Kelly Bennett has been named the Molten Patriot League Rookie of the Week, it was announced on Monday. Bennett's performance was one of the bright spots for the Mountain Hawks following a 1-3 weekend at the Patriot Invitational.
 
In four matches last weekend in Fairfax, Virginia, Bennett registered 11 kills and led the Mountain Hawks with 12 total blocks. The Plano, Texas product tallied five total blocks in Lehigh's 3-0 win over George Mason Friday afternoon.  She registered five kills against East Tennessee State Saturday morning and posted an impressive .303 hitting percentage on the weekend.
 
For the season, Bennett leads the Mountain Hawks with 27 blocks in eight matches. She also has 24 kills and a .198 hitting percentage.
 
Junior setter Amy Matula was another bright spot for the Mountain Hawks. Matula represented Lehigh on the on the Patriot Invitational All-Tournament team and received honorable mention accolades from the league on Monday. She led Lehigh with 119 assists spread over four matches with a high of 41 in a four-set loss to Maryland. The Memphis, Tennessee product also contributed eight kills, two service aces and 33 digs.
 
The Mountain Hawks opened the Patriot Invitational with a win over George Mason but dropped their final three matches to Maryland, William & Mary and East Tennessee State to fall to 3-5 on the season. Lehigh will travel to Villanova Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. match.
 
The Wildcats enter their home opener Tuesday at 3-3 on the season. Villanova went 3-0 at the James Madison Tournament two weekends ago but dropped three matches at the USD/SDSU Tournament this past weekend in San Diego.
 
Villanova leads the all-time series versus Lehigh 25-6 and has defeated the Mountain Hawks 3-1 in each of the last two seasons.
 
Following Tuesday's match, Lehigh will co-host the Crosstown Invitational with five matches scheduled for Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall Friday and Saturday. The Mountain Hawks will face Saint Peter's Friday at 5 p.m. before meeting Delaware State and Marist on Saturday.
