Complete Patriot League Release
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh field hockey senior Steph Fratoni and sophomore Gabby Tofig were recognized with Patriot League weekly awards on Monday as Fratoni was named Defensive Player of the Week and Tofig garnered Offensive Player of the Week laurels. Fratoni spearheaded a strong defensive effort and recorded a goal and assist while Tofig scored three goals over the two games, including the game-winner in both contests. The Mountain Hawks have now won three straight games and four of their last five.
Â
Lehigh's center back, Fratoni led a defense that allowed just three goals over the weekend, only one which came with either game on the line. Holy Cross scored its goal with less than one minute remaining on Saturday and the Mountain Hawks leading 3-0 while Sacred Heart scored a late penalty stroke goal on Sunday with Lehigh owning a convincing 4-1 lead. Fratoni also contributed offensively, scoring the Mountain Hawks' first goal against Holy Cross Saturday by making a deflection off a penalty corner early in the second half. She went on to assist Lehigh's first goal on Sunday. Fratoni is Lehigh's first Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week since the 2006 season.
Â
Tofig continued her hot streak offensively to reach seven goals on the season, which leads the league. She began by scoring Lehigh's second goal against Holy Cross Saturday off a rebound, which proved to be the difference in a 3-1 victory. Tofig went on to score twice on Sunday (to tie a career high), tallying Lehigh's second goal off a rebound and third goal on a breakaway opportunity. Those goals proved crucial in a 4-2 victory. It marked Tofig's second-career multi-goal game, both coming in the last five contests which coincides with Lehigh's 4-1 streak.
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper Julia Ward also garnered honorable mention recognition. She stopped 13-of-16 shots sent her way over the two games, making four saves against Holy Cross and nine vs. Sacred Heart. Ward tallied all nine of her saves against the Pioneers in the second half.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will return to action this Saturday when they host Colgate in a big Patriot League matchup. Gametime is set for 12 p.m. Lehigh will then travel to Fairfield on Sunday (2 p.m.).
