Rey wins challenge tournament to lead LVAC contingent at World Team Trials

MADISON, Wis. – Former Lehigh national champion Zach Rey '12 earned a spot on the U.S. national freestyle team to lead a contingent of wrestlers with ties to the Lehigh program at the U.S. World Team Trials, which wrapped up Sunday night at Kohl Center. Rey won the freestyle challenge tournament at 125 kg (275.5 lbs.) to reach the best-of-three finals against 2012 Olympian Tervel Dlagnev before falling in two matches by identical 5-0 scores.

Rey, the 2011 NCAA heavyweight champion and a three-time All-American for the Mountain Hawks, went 3-0 in Saturday afternoon's challenge tournament, winning a 4-1 decision over Matt Meulens of Titan Mercury Wrestling Club, and a 6-1 decision over Tyrell Fortune, also of Titan Mercury WC to get to the finals, where he defeated 2013 NCAA Champion Nick Gwiazdowski of NC State (NYAC) 9-3 to earn the right to face Dlagnev.

Three-time All-American Robert Hamlin '13 went 3-2 at 86 kg (189 lbs.). Following an opening round win over Pat Downey of the NYAC, Hamlin ran into Ed Ruth, Penn State's three-time national champion and the eventual winner of the World Team spot at 86 kg. In the consolations, Hamlin defeated Austin Trotman of Titan Mercury and longtime nemesis Quentin Wright of the Nittany Lion Wrestling club, before falling to Jon Reader of Sunkist Kids in the consolation semifinals.

Former Iowa State national champion David Zabriskie represented the Lehigh Valley Athletic Club at 97 kg (213 lbs.) but went 0-2.

On Friday, 2014 All-American Darian Cruz competed at 55 kg (121 lbs) in the FILA Junior World Team trials, going 1-2.Â
