LAS VEGAS – Five athletes with ties to the Lehigh wrestling program represented the Lehigh Valley Athletic Club Friday and Saturday at the 014 Vegas ASICS/U.S. Open at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Former Lehigh All-Americans Robert Hamlin '13 and Zack Rey '12 both placed in the top eight along with LVAC wrestler and former Iowa State national champion David Zabriskie.
Also competing for the LVAC were club member Steve Mytych and Lehigh junior Nathaniel Brown, who deferred his eligibility during the 2013-14 college season.
Rey posted the top finish among the five LVAC entrants, placing fourth at 125 kg (275.5 lbs.). The 2011 NCAA Champion lost his first match Friday before reeling off five straight victories in the consolations. The first three of his victories were by technical fall (win by ten points in freestyle). In the consolation final, Rey dropped a 4-1 decision to Tyrell Fortune of the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club.
Hamlin finished fifth at 86 kg (189 lbs.) posting a 6-2 overall record. Following a first round win, Hamlin fell to his NCAA postseason nemesis Quentin Wright in the round of 16, but posted four straight consolation victories to work his way back to fifth place.
Zabriskie competed in the 97 kg (213 lbs.) weight class and finished sixth with a 3-3 record. Following a quarterfinal loss, Zabriskie posted wins over Austin Schafer (Cowboy WC) and former Cornell national champion Cam Simaz to clinch a place in the top eight.
After posting a 19-3 record in his deferred year, Brown went 2-2 Friday at 86 kg. On the opposite side of the bracket from Hamlin, Brown won his first two matches by technical fall before dropping a 5-2 decision to former LVAC resident athlete and eventual champion Keith Gavin of Titan Mercury WC. Brown was eliminated following a 10-4 loss to Tyrel Todd of Sunkist Kids in his first consolation match.
Mytych went 1-2 at 57 kg, posting a 7-2 consolation win over Kyle Hutter of Titan Mercury.
The top seven finishers in each Olympic weight class qualify for the U.S. World Team Trials on May 31-June 1 in Madison, Wis.
