BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With Lehigh's spring practice segment winding down the Mountain Hawks will showcase the results of their spring work with the annual Brown and White Spring Game Saturday at 10 a.m. inside Goodman Stadium. The event will once again feature a modified scoring system, pitting the Lehigh offense (white) against the defense (brown).
Lehigh's spring segment has provided opportunities for new faces to step into the spotlight while also allowing the six new faces on the coaching staff to give a fresh perspective towards player evaluation. Injuries have somewhat hampered the Mountain Hawks' execution in spring ball but the team's effort and enthusiasm have remained strong.
The effort has been outstanding," explained Lehigh head coach Andy Coen. "We have a lot of young kids who are in their first spring. They're not really used to spring football but they've been flying around. They're trying to make an impression on the staff. With a new staff some guys who didn't play a lot last year may find opportunity because a different coach can evaluate them."
Some of the biggest questions surrounding Lehigh's offense entering the spring involved the quarterback position but due to injuries only one quarterback, rising senior A.J. Visconti, has been able to work in full from start to finish. With the passing game has struggled to get in sync this spring, the Mountain Hawks have been able to make improvements in the running game, where all four tailbacks have performed well.
"For the most part, the defense has had the upper hand on the offense, which is traditionally the case," Coen said. "A.J. has really been the only quarterback that's been able to practice full-go from beginning to end. We've lost some opportunity there due to the health of our quarterbacks, which is disappointing.
Coen continued, "The flip side of it is we've spent more time running the football and we've definitely gotten better there. I really like what I've seen from our four tailbacks: Brandon Yosha, Rich Sodeke, DJ Kee and Dan Brown who has gotten back into some live action and done pretty well. We're going to have a nice situation at tailback."
On the defensive side of the ball, Coen has been impressed with the linebacking group including senior Isaiah Campbell and sophomores Colton Caslow and Pierce Ripanti. Lehigh has dealt with some injuries in the secondary, but cornerbacks Olivier Rigaud and Brandon Leaks have performed well. On the defensive line, senior Arturo Gyles has settled in at nose guard, making plays and holding the point of attack.
Saturday's scrimmage will feature the introduction of Lehigh's captains for the 2014 season. After stretching and some positional drills the Mountain Hawks will break into their 11-on-11 scrimmage with some 7-on-7 and special teams work mixed in later. In addition to some improvements in the passing game, Coen would just like to see the Mountain Hawks execute better as their spring segment comes to a close.
"The execution has been hurt quite a bit because of the injuries we've had going into practice," Coen said. "I do want to throw the ball a little more. In our last scrimmage we completed some throws, but we didn't throw it all that much. I'd like to see us be more efficient throwing the football, not just from the quarterbacks but the protection, the quarterbacks and the wideouts.
"Efficiency has been a point of emphasis in this final week," Coen continued. "We have good schemes; schemes that work. We just need to get back to doing the little things and being better with our execution."
Saturday's event gets underway at 10 a.m. from Goodman Stadium and admission is free. For those unable to make it out to the Brown and White Game, Lehigh Athletics is proud to announce that live video coverage will be available on the Patriot League Network. The team of veteran Matt Kerr and former Lehigh linebacker Mike Yadush '93 will handle the commentary. This marks the ninth consecutive year in which the Brown and White game will be broadcast live on Lehighsports.com and the fifth straight year it will feature video coverage.
In addition, LehighGear.com, the Official Store of Lehigh Athletics will be on hand selling the 2014 Lehigh football schedule t-Shirt among other items. The schedule t-shirt is the first item available that features the Lehigh-specific logo for the 150th Lehigh-Lafayette game at Yankee Stadium in November.
