
Patterson wins 400 IM title to lead Lehigh women Friday at PLC

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Sophomore Courtney Patterson became the first Lehigh female in 11 years to win an individual Patriot League title as she captured gold in the 400 yard individual medley to lead the Mountain Hawks on day three of the Patriot League Championships at Lejeune Hall. Patterson set one of four school records for the Lehigh women on the evening as the Mountain Hawks have now set nine women's school marks during the championships.

Patterson's day began with a school record time of 4:19.56 in the 400 IM preliminaries, taking seven seconds off the mark set by Allison Rolish in 2010. Patterson posted the top time in qualifying and followed up that performance by taking nearly three seconds off her own record, clocking in at 4:16.73 in the finals to become the first Lehigh female Patriot League swimming champion since Linda Hendrixson won the 200 IM in 2003.

Lehigh had three swimmers reach championship finals on the women's side Friday night. In addition to Patterson, sophomore Carolyn Koch took fourth in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.45 and junior Alissa Leung finished eighth in the 100 yard backstroke coming in with a time of 56.73. Earlier Friday, Leung broke her own school record in the event with a time of 56.06 seconds.

Junior Mary Samuels had two school record swims in the 100 yard butterfly. Samuels set a school record with a 56.78 in the morning and eclipsed that mark with a 56.31 at night to win the B final. Freshman Kelly Carroll took 14th overall, swimming a 57.45 in the B final.

The Mountain Hawks also had two in the B Final in the 100 yard breaststroke, with sophomore Melissa Feeney finishing tenth with a time of 1:04.87 and junior Kimberly Weyand taking 11th with a time of 1:05.85.

In Friday's final event, the Mountain Hawks set a new school record in the 400 yard medley relay as Leung, Feeney and Samuels teamed with freshman Kaitlyn Ruffing to finish sixth overall in 3:50.67.

As a team, Lehigh remains in sixth place after three days with 212 points, but the Mountain Hawks are right on the heels of fifth place Colgate as the Mountain Hawks trail the Raiders by just 15.5 points. Navy leads Bucknell 525-431 as the Mids bid for a third straight women's title.

The Patriot League Championships conclude Saturday at Navy's Lejeune Hall. Preliminaries are set for 10:30 a.m. with finals set to start at 6 p.m. Once again, video coverage of the meet will be available online via the Patriot League Network.
