ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships began Wednesday night inside Navy's Lejeune Hall with Lehigh setting new school records in three of the five contested events. The opening night of competition featured the 200 yard medley relay and the 800 yard free relay plus the finals in women's three meter diving.
Â
Lehigh's men set school records in both relay events, finishing fifth in both as the Mountain Hawks sit in fifth place with 56 points after day one. The Mountain Hawk women finished third in the 800 free relay, good for 32 points but Lehigh was disqualified in the 200 medley relay and did not have any divers compete in the three meter event. Lehigh's women are in ninth place with those 32 points.
Â
After the medley relay team was disqualified in the first event of the evening, Lehigh's women bounced back with a strong showing in the 800 free relay as sophomores Courtney Patterson and Carolyn Koch and freshmen Kelly Carroll and Cora Summerfield posted a school record time of 7:22.42 seconds to claim third place. Their time smashed the previous school record set in 2010 by nearly 16 seconds.
Â
On the men's side junior Martin Kendig, sophomore Jake Hassel, senior Chris Hoke and freshman Jamal Willis posted a school record time of 1:30.86 in the 200 medley relay. The previous record of 1:31.52 was set last year by Kendig, Hassel, Hoke and Demetri Karedis. Lehigh's men closed the night strong as juniors Danny Bennett and Eric Sherwood teamed with freshmen Jacob Moyard and Justin White posted a time of 6:44.25 in the 800 free relay to knock 3.52 seconds off the previous mark set in 2010.
Â
Navy captured all four relay events to take the early team lead on both sides, while Chelsea Glincman of Boston University won the women's three meter dive.
Â
The four-day Patriot League Championship meet continued Thursday with preliminaries set for 10:30 a.m. from Navy's Lejeune Hall, and finals scheduled for 6 p.m.
