NWCA Release

PHILADELPHIA – For the second consecutive year, Lehigh's Mason Beckman squared off against A.J. Schopp of Edinboro in the NWCA All-Star Classic. Last year, Beckman claimed a 5-1 decision and was named Outstanding Wrestler for his team. Saturday night at Penn's Palestra, Schopp claimed a 4-2 win in the exhibition that unofficially kicks off the 2014-15 season.

Saturday's match pitted the nation's top two wrestlers at 133 in most preseason polls and was the final bout contested in front of 5,284 fans on the evening.

Beckman, a returning All-American ranked second in most preseason polls, scored the opening takedown in a first period scramble. No. 1-ranked Schopp responded with an escape as Beckman led 2-1 after one period.

Schopp chose top in the second period and was able to ride out, with Beckman warned for stalling in the process.

With Schopp over one minute of riding time, Beckman chose neutral in the third. Schopp however picked up the decisive takedown with 17 seconds remaining in the third period and added riding time advantage to win 4-2.

The matches at the NWCA All-Star Classic are considered exhibitions and do not count towards a wrestler's official season record.

Beckman and Schopp are now even 1-1 in matches at the All-Star Classic. In the only official college match between the two, Schopp defeated Beckman 5-0 in the consolation semifinals at last year's Midlands Championships.

Lehigh wrestlers are now 16-14 at the NWCA All-Star Classic. Beckman's loss snapped a four-match Lehigh winning streak at the classic.

Earlier Saturday, the NWCA announced its preseason dual meet rankings, with Lehigh coming in at No. 15. The Mountain Hawks will open the dual meet season Thursday night when they host Hofstra inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start and tickets can be purchased by calling 610-7LU-GAME or by visiting LehighTickets.com.
