
Lehigh women roll past Holy Cross for first win

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Lehigh women's swimming and diving team capped a strong opening weekend of competition with a 157-126 win over Holy Cross Sunday at the Hart Center Pool. The Mountain Hawks won 12 of 16 events and only scored one swimmer in each of the final six swimming events after a fast start.
Senior Alissa Leung won three individual events while junior Courtney Patterson won two to lead the Mountain Hawks, who evened their season record at 1-1.
Leung led a Lehigh sweep in her first individual event of the day, winning the 50 yard backstroke in 28.07 seconds. Freshman Rachel Rider and sophomore Kaitlyn Ruffing finished second and third, respectively. Leung also won the 100 back as Lehigh's lone scorer in 59.48 and captured the 200 yard individual medley in 2:12.72.
Patterson showcased her versatility with wins in the 1000 free and the 100 yard breaststroke events. She led a sweep in the 1000 free with a time of 10:34.76, with freshman Meghan Thompson and junior Melissa Feeney grabbing the next two spots. Patterson took the 100 breast in 1:09.76.
In addition to her third place finish in the 50 back, Ruffing won one of her top events, the 50 free, with a time of 24.66 seconds, while Thompson finished second. Thompson also won an event, the 500 free, in 5:17.23.
Other event winners for Lehigh included senior Kim Weyand, who took the 50 breast in 32.56, sophomore Cora Summerfield, who captured the 100 fly in 59.26, freshman Julianne Koch, who touched the wall in 54.84 to win the 100 free, and Rider, who took the 50 fly in 27.52.
Lehigh's 200 yard medley relay team got the Mountain Hawks off to a good start as Ruffing, Leung, Rider and junior Carolyn Koch led a Lehigh sweep with a win in 1:52.31.
On the diving boards, freshman Emily Speakman added three points with a third place finish in the one meter, with a score of 122.55.
Lehigh will be off next weekend and the Mountain Hawks will return to action with two home meets October 23-24 at Jacobs Pool. The Mountain Hawks will host West Chester in their home opener October 23 at 3 p.m. before welcoming the Rider Broncs the following afternoon.
