Mountain Hawks compete well in season opener at Boston University

BOSTON – The Lehigh women's swimming and diving team opened its season with a strong effort against a tough Boston University squad Saturday at BU's Competition Pool. The Mountain Hawks won seven of 16 events but eventually fell 169-125 against the Terriers.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Ruffing and junior Melissa Feeney led the way winning two individual events apiece. Ruffing, the reigning Patriot League Champion in the 100 yard freestyle swept the 50 and the 100 free events on Saturday. In the 50 free, Ruffing posted a time of 23.94 and Lehigh posted four of the top five times in the event. Junior Carolyn Koch finished second while freshman Julianne Koch finished fourth. Ruffing then took the 100 free in 52.58.
Feeney's day began with a win in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.60 and she later added a win in the 200 with a time of 2:25.29. Senior Kimberly Weyand contributed points with a third place finish behind Feeney in the 100.
Junior Courtney Patterson posted Lehigh's other individual win, nabbing the 200 yard individual medley in 2:09.42.
Lehigh also fared well in the relays, as seniors Alissa Leung and Mary Caitlin Samuels teamed with Patterson and Ruffing to win the 200 medley relay in 1:47.56. Ruffing and the Koch sisters teamed with freshman Meghan Thompson to post the top time in the 400 free relay at 3:30.63.
The Mountain Hawks wrap-up their season-opening weekend trip to New England when they square off against Holy Cross Sunday at 11 a.m.
