MORAGA, Calif. - The Lehigh women's soccer team finished off an undefeated California swing on Sunday by defeating the host Saint Mary's Gaels 2-0. With the win, the Mountain Hawks captured the Saint Mary's College Classic championship. Senior Murphee Greeley had a goal and assist on Sunday to earn Tournament MVP honors.
Both Lehigh and Pacific finished the weekend 1-0-1, but the Mountain Hawks won the tournament due to the best goal differential.
"It was great," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "This was a payoff of all the hard work. I thought we had a tremendous first half, probably the best half of soccer we've played in a long time. We possessed the ball, defended well and created chances."
Joining Greeley on the All-Tournament Team were juniors Darby Dustman (who scored Lehigh's second goal on Sunday) and Danielle Salans (who scored on Friday) along with sophomore goalie Ani Nahapetian.
Lehigh got off to a quick start as Greeley scored her first goal of the season at the 6:56 mark, making a steal before finishing the unassisted goal to make it 1-0.
The Mountain Hawks made it 2-0 less than three minutes into the second half as Dustman scored off a free kick at 47:53, from freshman Laura Courtney and Greeley.
The Gaels made a charge, but Nahapetian stood tall. No save was bigger than a stop of a Melissa Madrid penalty kick in the 78th minute. That preserved Lehigh's 2-0 lead, and Saint Mary's couldn't get off a shot on goal the rest of the game.
"We're happy that the team continues to get better every single game," said Lambinus. "We had a number of girls contribute this weekend. It's our first win on the road since Columbia last year so it's proving all the hard work in the offseason is starting to pay off. They're playing really well."
The Mountain Hawks represented the university well in their first-ever trip to California. Lehigh is riding a three-game unbeaten streak after dropping its first two games of the season.
"We probably had 100 different Lehigh supporters out here between family, friends, alumni and fans, so it was great to represent the way we did," said Lambinus. "We got a lot of complements about the way we play. It was great to come out here and win the tournament the way we did."
Final shots were 19-8 in favor of Saint Mary's while the Gaels held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Nahapetian finished with five saves for her third-career shutout across Kaeli Schmidt who made two.
The Mountain Hawks kick off Patriot League play on Saturday when they travel to American to face the Eagles.
