BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a strong second half at Minnesota Friday, the Lehigh men's basketball team returns home to welcome Rider for its home opener on Tuesday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and will air live on the Patriot League Digital Network. Tuesday marks the season opener for the Broncs.
Â
After a tough first half, Lehigh rebounded in the second to play the Golden Gophers even (44-44) over the final 20 minutes while outscoring Minnesota 40-35 over the final 16 minutes. The Mountain Hawks started three players who never played a college game before, and all showed strong flashes. Freshman Austin Price scored 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting, classmate Tim Kempton added eight on 4-of-10 from the field and sophomore Jesse Chuku scored eight points while adding 10 rebounds. The Mountain Hawks held the rebounding edge in the first half and were only outrebounded 38-35 for the game.
Â
Senior Mackey McKnight led the way with 18 points, including nine in the final 1:34. The Mountain Hawks trailed by as many as 24 (47-23) but immediately staged a 9-0 run that increased to 13-1 as a pair of Justin Goldsborough free throws pulled Lehigh within 12 (48-36) with 10 minutes still remaining. However, Minnesota answered to regain a 20-point lead, but the Mountain Hawks wouldn't go away, pulling as close as 13 in the final six minutes.
Â
Lehigh will face a strong Rider squad that finished 19-15 a season ago, advancing to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament where it beat Hartford before falling to East Carolina. A perennial contender in the MAAC, the Broncs lose leading scorer Jonathon Thompson but return Anthony Myles and Daniel Stewart who both averaged double-figure points last season.
Â
The Mountain Hawks are looking to continue their home dominance as of late and win in the friendly confines of Stabler Arena for the 26th time in their last 30 tries.
Â
Lehigh is 40-55 all-time against teams currently in the MAAC, playing Rider by far the most times going back to their days as East Coast Conference foes.
Â
Price was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday after finishing with 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Price scored nine points and was 3-of-4 from the field in the second half. Last Friday marked the earliest game in school history (Nov. 8), beating the previous earliest game when Lehigh played at St. John's on Nov. 9, 2011.
Â
Tuesday marks Rider's season opener following a 19-15 season and 12-6 record in MAAC play. After a slower start, the Broncs ended the regular season on a tear, entering the MAAC Tournament winners of five straight games. Despite a first-round exit, the squad reached the CollegeInsider.com Tournament for the second time in three seasons. Rider loses its leading scorer Jonathon Thompson, but Anthony Myles and Daniel Stewart return after averaging 12.4 and 10.6 points per game, respectively. Stewart also led the way in rebounds with 7.2 per contest. Two freshmen and three seniors are in Rider's projected starting five for Tuesday.
Â
Lehigh and Rider have played 50 times in their history that dates back to their days in the East Coast Conference. The Broncs hold a 30-20 all-time advantage. The teams have played only twice in the last 23 years. Rider won both meetings, 86-71 in 2009-10 and 69-68 one season prior. Lehigh's last win over Rider came on Feb. 10, 1990 by a 76-69 final.
Â
Following Tuesday's game, Lehigh will hit the road for five straight away from home, beginning with a trip to Fordham on Friday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on SNY. The Mountain Hawks then head to Houston on Sunday for a 2 p.m. ET game against the Cougars.
