BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh senior defender Katie Gavalchin was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on Monday following a strong effort in the Mountain Hawks' 2-1 win over league newcomer Loyola. Gavalchin and the defense allowed just one late goal to lead Lehigh to its first Patriot League victory of the season.

Gavalchin's honor marks the first weekly award for the Mountain Hawks this season.

Gavalchin was identified by head coach Eric Lambinus as the team's top defender and a difference maker on Saturday. She won almost every tackle and helped spearhead a defense which allowed a single goal and has given up just 15 goals in 12 games this season. Lehigh's defense allowed just two corner kicks, and only one in the second half, despite a late push by the Greyhounds.

Loyola scored at the 77:55 mark to pull within 2-1, but the Mountain Hawks gave up just three shots the rest of the way (and none on goal) as Lehigh pulled out the victory.

Gavalchin has made an impressive transition from midfield to defense this season, starting all 12 games. Lehigh currently stands 1-4-0 in league play for three points, standing just three points out of a Patriot League Tournament spot with four league games still remaining.

Junior Danielle Salans also garnered honorable mention recognition after scoring Lehigh's first goal before creating the second. Salans was taken down in the box which led to senior Murphee Greeley's penalty kick goal and a 2-0 lead, which proved critical.

The Mountain Hawks will head to Princeton on Wednesday for a nonleague tilt against the Tigers. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
