Mountain Hawks drop 4-0 final at Providence

8/31/2012 11:24:00 PM | Women's Soccer

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence scored early and the Mountain Hawks couldn't rebound as the Lehigh women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 final on Friday afternoon. Providence scored twice in each half to drop Lehigh to 0-2-0 on the season. The Mountain Hawks look to rebound on Sunday when they travel to Binghamton to face the Bearcats.

"Right now, we just aren't competing enough in the key areas of the field," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "Despite the outcome, we do some really good things for periods of time. We have moments where we defend properly and can keep the ball, but not enough to get a result against a good team like Providence. But I am confident we can get better over the course of the season."

Catherine Zimmerman put Lehigh into an early hole with a goal just 4:25 into the game. The Friars added goals in the 20th, 65th and 87th minutes. Zimmerman finished with a game-high two goals.

The game marked the first-ever meeting between Lehigh and Providence and the second straight Big East opponent for the Mountain Hawks.

Lehigh sophomore Ashley Blanks made five saves in goal, one game after making a career-high 13 vs. Seton Hall. Juniors Murphee Greeley and Paige Dyrek each posted a shot on goal, coming in the 15th and 69th minutes. However, Friars' goalie Jessica Goudreault was there to make the saves.

The Friars held a 17-4 edge in shots and 5-0 in corner kicks. Blanks made five saves while a pair of Providence goalkeepers combined for two.

Lehigh looks to bounce back on Sunday when it travels to Binghamton for a 1 p.m. game.
