BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Recently graduated Chris Lum of football and Jana Basubas of women's soccer have been named the inaugural Leadership and Character Award Winners, as announced by the Patriot League on Monday. The awards were chosen in a vote by the league's senior woman administrators.
The Patriot League has established an Award of Leadership and Character to recognize and honor those who demonstrate excellence in leadership and service while participating in Patriot League athletics. All Patriot League student-athletes and a team as a whole associated with a member institution's intercollegiate athletic program are eligible for the award.

Lum led the Mountain Hawks to back-to-back Patriot League Championships and FCS Playoff appearances in 2010 and '11. He earned numerous All-America honors, was named ECAC and Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and perhaps most impressively, was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award (Most Outstanding Player in FCS).

The Lake Orion, Mich. native has made a difference in the community as well, speaking in front of 4,000 elementary and middle school students at women's basketball's annual “Education Day.” He also served as a panelist at the campus-wide leadership conference and facilitated group discussions with Lehigh's Emerging Leaders program.

Basubas served as team captain in 2011, a year after leading the Mountain Hawks to their first Patriot League Championship. She was also named a candidate for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in her final season based on four C's: Classroom, Character, Community and Competition.

In the community, Basubas led numerous service projects, including a team 5K in the Lehigh Valley for Ashley Moyer, a soldier killed in the war against terrorism.

The other male candidates included Bucknell's Matthew Segar, Colgate's Christopher Johnson and Patrick Letourneau, and Lehigh's Andrew Krentz.

The female candidates included American's Melissa Casale, Colgate's Marie-Louise Brase and Madeline Malone, and Holy Cross' Sarah Dahlstrom.
