BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Several Lehigh freshmen impressed in their college debuts, but the Lehigh women's swimming and diving team dropped a narrow 122-119 decision to visiting West Chester in their season-opening meet Friday at Jacobs Pool. The Mountain Hawks won eight of 13 events, but an undermanned diving squad gave up 28 points on the boards.
The meet came down to the final event, where the Golden Rams claimed first and third place in the 400 yard free relay to outscore Lehigh 13-4 in the event. Lehigh opens its season at 0-1, while West Chester moves to 3-0.
“The meet was so close,” explained Lehigh head coach Rob Herb. “We just didn't have enough divers to pull it out. Freshmen Cady Zawatson and Courtney Patterson were double-winners to lead the way. It was a great effort on both sides.”
Zawatson led Lehigh in the distance events, taking the 1000 free in 10:25.03 and the 500 in 5:08.64. Patterson captured the 200 free in 1:54.35 and later won the 200 fly in 2:09.20, with sophomore Mary Samuels finishing second. Freshman Carolyn Koch also turned in a strong performance, winning the 100 free in 53.17 seconds and finishing second in the 50 free with classmate Rebekah Campo not far behind in third.
Lehigh's eighth win came in the meet-opening 400 medley relay as Leung, Campo, Patterson and Koch posted a time of 3:57.33.
On the diving boards, junior Mercy Du scored four points with fourth place finishes in the one meter and three meter events.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pool on Saturday October 27 when they travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to face the Colgate Raiders at 1 p.m.
