Mountain Hawks drop 3-1 final at Colgate

10/13/2012 10:17:00 PM | Field Hockey

HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Lehigh field hockey team came out with a vengeance, firing six shots on goal in an 8:13 span, but Colgate responded to defeat the Mountain Hawks, 3-1, on Saturday. Elaina Brown scored all three goals for the Raiders while Lehigh senior Kim Eng added a tally just 6:37 into the second half. Lehigh continues its busy weekend Sunday when it travels to #23 Albany to face the Great Danes.

The Mountain Hawks came out of the gate strong. After a Lauren Dittman shot was stopped by sophomore goalie Sydney Maltinsky-Wilson, Lehigh reeled off the game's next six shots (all on goal) and two penalty corners. All that came in the span of 8:13. Five of the shots were saved by Raiders' goalie Amanda DiDomizio while Adriana Libutti added a big defensive stop.

In total, five of the six shots came from freshmen including three straight from Abigail Bakke in a 10-second span, at 15:25 and 15:35.

Colgate responded with a strong chance off a penalty corner just over two minutes later, but sophomore Steph Fratoni came up with a big defensive stop to keep the game deadlocked. The Raiders went on to add three more shots (two on goal) before Brown converted the game's first goal off a penalty corner at 21:44.

The Raiders continued to add pressure, taking a 2-0 advantage at 31:34 behind Brown's second goal off a shot from the middle of the circle. Colgate would take that lead into halftime.

Eng pulled Lehigh right back into the game at the 41:37 mark, taking a feed from Fratoni and going in all the way on DiDomizio. Eng finished her team-leading eighth goal of the season to pull within 2-1.
However, Colgate answered less than five minutes later when Brown converted her hat trick goal to make it 3-1.

Lehigh created three more shots and a pair of penalty corners the rest of the way, but couldn't pull any closer.

Colgate held a 16-11 edge in shots while penalty corners were tied at five. Maltinsky-Wilson finished with eight saves across DiDomizio who posted five.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Sunday when they travel to #23 Albany for a 2 p.m. contest. Lehigh will then head to Patriot League foe Bucknell next Saturday for a big showdown with the Bison.
