Lehigh looks to get back on track, Wednesday vs. Siena

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following three straight on the road, the Lehigh field hockey team returns home on Wednesday when it hosts Siena at 4 p.m. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a pair of losses last weekend in Connecticut, but return to the friendly confines of Ulrich Field where they defeated La Salle just two home games ago.
Lehigh made a number of valiant comeback attempts at Sacred Heart Friday, but fell short as the Pioneers netted two goals in the final minute for a 6-4 win over the Mountain Hawks. The story offensively was junior Kim Eng, who netted a pair of second-half tallies. Freshman Natalie Tacka and sophomore Brittany Johnson scored their first-career goals as well.
The Mountain Hawks hung tough against #14 Maine in the early going Saturday in a neutral site contest at Quinnipiac, but the nation's highest scoring offense exploded for all of its goals in a 47-minute stretch.
The Saints have struggled so far this season, going 0-8. Siena and Lehigh have played two common opponents, Maine and La Salle. Both teams lost to Maine; the Mountain Hawks defeated the Explorers, 4-3, while the Saints fell, 6-0. Leading Siena's offense is Michaela Sullivan with four points (two goals). Mackenzie Smith has scored the Saints' other goal on the season while Olivia Whelly and Katherine Bowie each have an assist. Beth Meyers has started all eight games in goal, posting a 4.96 GAA and .732 save percentage.
Lehigh is a perfect 12-0 all-time against Siena, winning each of the past two years, 4-0 and 3-2. Last year's 4-0 final marked the first-career shutout for former goalkeeper and current graduate assistant coach Jessica Miller. The sides first met in 1993, a 4-2 Lehigh victory.
The Mountain Hawks return to action for a busy weekend when they travel to American for their Patriot League Opener on Saturday (12 p.m.) and return home to host defending NEC Champion Rider on Sunday (1 p.m.).
