BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The winter storm that blanketed most of the northeast couldn't prevent Lehigh from hosting Colgate in its first home meet of the season Saturday at Jacobs Pool. Despite the loss of power in Lehigh's Taylor Gym, the Mountain Hawks and Raiders went through with their meet, with Colgate's women flexing their muscle in a 214-85 win.
Colgate has won four of the last five Patriot League Championships in women's swimming and diving. Although Lehigh did not win any women's events, there were several impressive performances. Freshman Alissa Leung, sophomore Giovanna Patafio and junior Emily DiDonato each led the Mountain Hawks with two runner-up finishes on the day. Leung continued her strong start to the season by placing second in both the 100 and 200 yard backstroke events. Patafio hung touch with the Raiders in the distance freestyle events, placing second in the 1000 free and the 500 free. DiDonato took second in the 200 yard breaststroke and led a 2-3-4 finish for the Lehigh women in the 100 breast with freshman Kim Weyand and sophomore Stephanie Yaszemski finishing behind her.
On the diving boards, junior Daniela Sonderegger and sophomore Mercy Du finished second and third respectively in the three meter event.
The loss drops Lehigh's record to 1-2 overall and 1-1 against Patriot League opponents. Lehigh's men were able to earn a split on the day, downing the Raiders 229-62 to move to 3-0 on the year.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pool next Saturday when they host Rider at Jacobs Pool. Diving events will begin at 10 a.m. with swimming to follow at 1 p.m.
