BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a stellar 15-save performance for her first-career shutout, Lehigh sophomore goalkeeper Sierra Segear has earned Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week for the third time in the past six weeks. Segear stopped 90 percent of the shots sent her way to lead the Mountain Hawks to a pair of wins last week, over Penn (4-3) and Bucknell (1-0).
Segear began the week by making 12 saves in a 4-3 victory over Penn, Lehigh's first-ever win over the Quakers. Seven stops came in the second half as she helped keep Penn's strong second-half charge at bay.
The Wilkes-Barre, Pa. native went on to post the best game of her young career against Bucknell Saturday, stopping all 15 shots sent her way for her first-career shutout. The Bison fired 17 total shots in the second half, 12 on goal, with Segear stopping them all (making 11 along with Marie Mignogna's defensive save). Bucknell had a number of golden opportunities with 10 second-half penalty corners, but Segear stood on her head, including one stretch in the 67th minute when she made three successive saves off a corner as Bucknell was making one final last-ditch effort to no avail.
Segear also saved a penalty stroke just 3:24 into the second half to keep Lehigh up, 1-0, and momentum in the Mountain Hawks' favor. She helped Lehigh earn its first shutout in Patriot League play since a 1-0 blanking of Lafayette in 2005.
In 14 games this season (and her career), Segear has 11 double-digit save performances (including seven of the last eight games). Her save percentage jumped to a Patriot League leading .790 while she continues to lead the league with 173 saves.
The Mountain Hawks now hit the road for their final two games of the regular season when they travel to archrival Lafayette on Saturday before heading to Holy Cross the following Saturday (Oct. 29).
