HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Lehigh volleyball team fell to Colgate in straight sets Friday night in the first of two Patriot League matches this weekend for the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh was led by junior Taylor Poole's five kills while sophomores Amanda Clark, Paige Kruse and Lizzy Silverstein each added four kills apiece. Lehigh will look to rebound from the loss when it takes on Bucknell Saturday at 4 p.m.
Lehigh got off to a quick start in the first set, building a 9-3 lead. But Colgate responded and took advantage of Lehigh errors to take the set 25-18. The Mountain Hawks had seven kills and 13 errors in the set.
The second set was all Colgate as Lehigh dropped the set 25-14. The Mountain Hawks had just six kills and 11 errors, making a total of 24 errors in the first two sets. Lehigh has only had 24 errors total in three matches this season and two were in 5-set matches.
“We just had too many errors and gave away too many points,” said head coach Bob Bertucci. “We played awful. Our poor play continued to build Colgate's confidence where by the third game even though we weren't playing as bad, they were just on a roll.”
The third set was close most of the way as Colgate got off to a quick start leading 18-13, but Lehigh battled back with four-straight points to cut the lead to 18-17. But the Mountain Hawks couldn't get over the hump, dropping the final set 25-19.
Lehigh is now 9-7 and 1-2 in the Patriot League while Colgate improves to 5-10 and 2-1 in league play.
The Mountain Hawks will look to put this one behind them as they take on Bucknell Saturday at 4 p.m. It will be the 63rd meeting between the schools as Lehigh holds a 37-25 edge since they first meet in 1977. Last season, the two split its two matches as Lehigh fell in straight sets at home but won in five sets on the road.
“We are just going to look at the task ahead,” said Bertucci. “We are going to try to forget about the loss and look at the immediate future and focus on Bucknell. We just have to play like we are capable of playing.”
