9/4/2010 3:36:00 AM | Volleyball

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Despite putting up a fight in each set, the Lehigh volleyball team fell to Sacred Heart by a 3-0 count on Friday night at the Sacred Heart Invitational. The Pioneers prevailed 25-18 in the first set, 25-19 in the second set and 25-18 in the third set to snap Lehigh's three-match winning streak. Junior Angelika Kopacz led the way with five kills and nine digs on the night.

“We came out early and stuck to our gameplan,” Lehigh head coach Jenny Maurer said. “Then we started giving away free points and not taking care of the ball. There were too many missed opportunities that we didn't capitalize on.”

Freshman Courtney McCutchan, the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week, notched a team-high 11 digs in the match, while sophomore Taylor Poole registered four kills and two solo blocks. Poole also posted an impressive .400 hitting percentage, committing no attack errors in the match.

Taylor Poole did a great job tonight,” Maurer said. “She really took care of the ball when we needed her to.”

Sacred Heart's Dianis Mercado recorded a double-double with a game-high 13 kills and 11 digs. Ashlyn Trimble also reached double figures in kills with 10 for the Pioneers.

Freshman Paige Kruse chipped in four kills for Lehigh, while freshmen Dana Raber and Rachel Charles each added seven digs. Junior Jessica Kudirka led the team with 11 assists on the night.

“Give Sacred Heart credit tonight, they played fast,” Maurer said. “They were the aggressors and we were on our heels.”

The Mountain Hawks will try to bounce back tomorrow when they wrap up the Sacred Heart Invitational with a pair of matches against Jacksonville (11 a.m.) and Dartmouth (5 p.m.).
