9/25/2010 9:59:00 PM | Volleyball

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Lehigh volleyball team earned its first Patriot League victory of the season with a 3-1 win over Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks hit .245 for the match and received double-double performances from juniors Angelika Kopacz and Jessica Kudirka as well as freshman Courtney McCutchan. Lehigh improves to 7-7 with the victory.

“It was nice to see us play to the level we're capable of,” Lehigh head coach Jenny Maurer said. “We were fast, energetic, and we controlled the game. It was a fun match. We're back.”

Following a 3-1 defeat against Army to open Patriot League play on Friday night, the Mountain Hawks came out strong on Saturday to win the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-13. Holy Cross rebounded with a 25-19 win in set three, but Lehigh punched right back with a 25-20 fourth-set victory to seal the match.

Taylor Poole BRH_7039.jpg" />Kopacz led the team with 17 kills and added 13 digs for her eighth double-double of the year. McCutchan also chipped in her eighth double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs, while Kudirka posted 26 assists and 13 digs.

“We did a great job of focusing on our passing,” Maurer explained. “Our passers were getting the ball to the setters and allowing them to run our offense. We were also extremely disciplined and relentless on defense.”

Sophomore Taylor Poole provided an impressive performance with 13 kills, five total blocks and a .500 hitting percentage. Freshman Rachel Charles added a career-high six service aces and led the match with 22 digs.

“Rachel led the way in terms of being aggressive behind the service line," Maurer said. "Across the board, we were really going after the ball. Taylor has been up there in the rankings in hitting percentage all year, she was running everywhere and transitioning very well.”

Megan Lynch was the primary offensive threat for Holy Cross, posting 16 kills and 12 digs. Chelsey O'Donnell registered 30 assists and Angela Chisholm tallied 15 digs for the Crusaders, who fell to 7-12 overall and 1-1 in league play.

Lehigh returns home for a pair of matches next weekend when Colgate visits Leeman-Turner Arena on October 1 at 7 p.m. and Bucknell pays a visit the following day at 4 p.m.
