Colgate slips by Lehigh in five-set affair

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team lost a tough one on Friday night, falling to league foe Colgate by a 3-2 score at Leeman-Turner Arena. Three Mountain Hawks posted double-doubles on the night, including junior Jessica Kudirka, who notched 11 digs and 20 assists. The defeat drops the Mountain Hawks to 7-8 overall and 1-2 in league play.

“When we were the aggressors, when we were communicating, we played very clean,” Lehigh head coach Jenny Maurer explained. “Colgate isn't a team that gives you an inch, but we had too many breakdowns.”

The Mountain Hawks started the match strong with a 25-22 win in the first set, but Colgate battled back to even things up after a 25-15 triumph in the second frame. Lehigh responded with a 25-19 win in set three and appeared to have the upper hand in the fourth with an 18-16 lead, but the Raiders scored nine unanswered points to take the set, 25-18, and force a deciding fifth frame. Lehigh raced out to a 5-0 lead in the set and was the first to 10 points, but could not hold off Colgate's comeback effort as the Raiders slid by, 16-14.

“We can't let sets go like that,” Maurer admitted. “We should have never let the match go five sets. We did a good job putting ourselves in a position to win, we just have to capitalize better and cut down on errors.”

Sophomore Taylor Poole led the Brown and White with 12 kills to go along with four block assists. Freshman Courtney McCutchan, the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week, added a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs, while junior Angelika Kopacz added 11 kills and 26 digs. Junior Chelsea Sheridan chipped in three block assists and freshman Dana Raber posted 19 assists to go along with five digs.

Maureen Colligan and Logan Keala both slammed down 16 kills for the Raiders, while Devon Applegate posted a match-high 28 digs. Lindsay Young and Casey Ritt combined for 13 total blocks as Colgate improved to 8-7 overall and 2-1 in league play.

The Mountain Hawks will try to bounce back on Saturday when they welcome Bucknell to Leeman-Turner Arena at 4 p.m. Live stats and video will be available on Lehighsports.com.
