The Black Knights took the first two sets by scores of 25-22, before Lehigh battled back to win the third set, 25-23. The Mountain Hawks' bid for a comeback was cut short in the fourth set, however, as Army prevailed by a 25-19 margin.
“We had some first-game jitters,” Lehigh head coach Jenny Maurer admitted. “The scores were certainly respectable, but I was disappointed with our inconsistency. We have raised expectations this year and we expect so much. It was a competitive match that was well-fought by two very good teams.”
Kopacz (12 kills, 12 digs) and McCutchan (11 kills, 12 digs) each notched their seventh double-double of the season, while Army's Ariana Mankus recorded a double-double of her own with a match-high 16 kills and 11 digs. McCutchan also added three block assists and hit .357 in the match.
Junior Jessica Kudirka chipped in a team-best 22 assists for Lehigh and freshman Amanda Clark posted four block assists and four kills. Freshman Rachel Charles notched double-digit digs (12) for the 10th time in 13 matches this season.
“We need to cut down on our unforced errors,” Maurer explained. “We need to cut down on the things that are under our control and put more pressure on our opponents.”
Lehigh will head right back to the court on Saturday when it travels to Holy Cross for a 2 p.m. matchup in Worcester, Mass. The Brown and White have won four straight matches against the Crusaders dating back to 2007.
