HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Lehigh volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday at the JMU Tournament, defeating Loyola (Md.), 3-0, and falling to host James Madison by the same score. Freshman Rachel Charles and sophomore Taylor Poole were named to the All-Tournament team after helping Lehigh finish with two wins in three matches over the weekend.

In the first match against Loyola (Md.), the Mountain Hawks (5-6) took the first set by a 25-17 count and controlled the middle set, 25-18. Lehigh closed out the match with a 25-20 victory in the third set to earn their first 3-0 win of the season. In match two, James Madison prevailed by a score of 25-21 in each of the first two sets, before taking the third set, 25-22.

“One of the biggest differences between the first match and the second match was how clean we played,” Lehigh head coach Jenny Maurer said. “In the first match, our team found a way to do what they needed to do to finish.”

Junior Angelika Kopacz led the team against Loyola (Md.) with nine kills, while Charles added 20 digs. Junior Jessica Kudirka registered a team-high 20 assists and freshman Courtney McCutchan fell just two kills shy of a double-double with an eight-kill, 11-dig effort. Poole chipped in four block assists and freshman Dana Raber added 13 assists.

The Brown and White posted a .282 hitting percentage in the match, including a .419 clip in the second set.

Poole led the way in the kills department against James Madison, posting nine in the match. McCutchan again added a double-digit dig performance with 10, along with five kills. Kudirka chipped in 17 assists and Charles posted 14 digs, while Kopacz served up a pair of aces to go along with nine digs and five kills.

“James Madison was definitely the best team we played this weekend,” Maurer admitted. “They transitioned well and capitalized on opportunities well. We did some great things throughout the match and I think we fought hard. Overall, it was a great weekend for us.”

Poole finished the tournament with 27 kills, nine digs, eight blocks and two service aces, while hitting .317. Charles posted 55 digs over the weekend, averaging 5.5 per set, and committed only three reception errors.

The Mountain Hawks will return home for their next match against St. Peter's on Wednesday, September 15 at 7 p.m. Live stats and video will be available on Lehighsports.com.
