BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh freshman point guard Mackey McKnight has earned his second Patriot League Rookie of the Week award in the past three weeks, as announced on Monday. The native of Houston, Texas enjoyed a strong performance at USC on Thursday, scoring a team-high 10 points, while tying a career-high with four rebounds to go along with two assists.
McKnight is now tied with Bucknell's Cameron Ayers and Navy's J.J. Avila for the most rookie of the week laurels this season (2), while teammate Anthony D'Orazio has garnered one as well.
Lehigh's top performer at USC, McKnight's 10 points came on 3-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-3 from three-point range. Eight of those points came in the game's first 8:17. This came against a red-hot Trojans' team, who recently defeated No. 18 Tennessee and No. 19 Texas while falling by only one at No. 3 Kansas.
McKnight also hit 2-of-2 free throw and has now hit 34 of his last 36 (94 percent) over the last nine games. He is shooting 86 percent from the charity stripe for the year.
For the season, McKnight leads the Mountain Hawks and is second in the Patriot League averaging 4.1 assists per game (49 assists in 12 games). He is also fourth on the team in scoring (8.2).
Also on Monday, sophomore C.J. McCollum was highlighted in Mark Adams' ESPN.com article titled “A weekly look at the mid-major scene.” McCollum was listed under Who's Hot as it reads “This sophomore is special, and he's putting up big numbers for Patriot League contender Lehigh.”
The Mountain Hawks return to Stabler Arena after the holiday for a matchup against Saint Peter's on Dec. 29 before heading to Yale two days later to face the Bulldogs. Tickets for all home games are now on sale and may be purchased on Lehighsports.com or by calling the ticket office at (610) 7LU-GAME.
