The sophomore sensation joins Bucknell's Patrick King, who also won four straight player of the week awards during the 1991-92 season. Only six weeks into the season, he is already just the 13th player in Patriot League history with four Player of the Week laurels in a season and is only one away from tying the single-season record, held by American's Garrison Carr, who won five during the 2008-09 campaign.
McCollum's weekly award is already the 13th of his career (nine rookie, four player) in just 22 awardings. Just 11 games into his sophomore season, he stands only three away from tying Bucknell's Kevin Bettencourt for the most weekly awards in league history.
A light week saw McCollum lead the Mountain Hawks to a wire-to-wire 79-61 win over Saint Francis last Monday, scoring 20 points on 8-of-17 shooting, his seventh 20+ point game of the season. He also pulled down eight rebounds while adding three assists and three steals.
The Canton, Ohio native is only 121 points away from becoming the 28th Mountain Hawk in program history to reach 1,000 career points. His eight rebounds on Monday also propelled him to exactly 250 in his young career.
McCollum's 22.5 points per game lead the Patriot League and stand 12th in the nation, while his 2.5 steals per game lead the league and rank 20th nationally. He is also second in the Patriot League with 7.7 rebounds per contest. In addition, McCollum's 42 points at Kent State tied UConn's Kemba Walker for the nation's highest single-game scoring output this season.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Thursday when they travel to Southern California to face the Trojans. New tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m. ET. USC, who plays at Tennessee on Tuesday, nearly ended No. 3 Kansas' 64-game home winning streak, but fell just short, 70-68. Following the game, Lehigh returns to Stabler Arena after the holidays for a matchup against Saint Peter's on Dec. 29. Tickets for all home games are now on sale and may be purchased on Lehighsports.com or by calling the ticket office at (610) 7LU-GAME.
