Mountain Hawks inch closer to PL Tournament with 3-2 win over Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Lehigh volleyball team moved into a fourth place tie in the Patriot League standings by winning a five-set thriller over Bucknell Friday night at Davis Gym. Set scores were 17-25, 25-17, 20-15, 25-18 and 15-8 as Lehigh moves to 12-11 overall. Bucknell falls to 8-15. Both teams are 6-5 in the league.

"I'm really proud of our team," said Lehigh head coach Jenny Maurer. "We made some adjustments this week due to lineup changes. It was an up-and-down match but we were able to iron out the inconsistencies. In the second and fourth sets, we controlled the game and were able to carry that momentum into the fifth set where we finally hit our stride."

The Mountain Hawks had four players reach double digit kills as Lehigh hit .232 as a team. Sophomore Taylor Poole and freshman Courtney McCutchan led Lehigh with 14 kills apiece while freshman Paige Kruse added 10 kills and hit .625. McCutchan added 20 digs while junior Jessica Kudirka also had a double-double with 50 assists and 14 digs.

After dropping the first set, the Mountain Hawks responded by starting the second set on an 8-2 run.

Lehigh dropped the third set but responding in the fourth set that for the most part was tightly contested. The Mountain Hawks led by seven mid-set and after the Bison narrowed the deficit to three, Lehigh opened the lead back up and won by seven.

The Mountain Hawks won the first six points of the deciding set and never looked back. Poole had three straight kills to end the match.

Kyleigh McAhren led Bucknell with 13 kills and a .367 attack percentage. The Bison hit 163 as a team.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the court on Saturday when they visit Colgate. First serve is set for 2 p.m. from Cotterell Court.
