BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's soccer team is ranked ninth in the latest NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings released on Tuesday, its first regional ranking since 2005. Currently tied for first in the Patriot League, the Mountain Hawks are 8-3-2 overall and 3-1-0 in league play.
“It's a nice honor to be ranked regionally by the NSCAA,” said head coach Eric Lambinus. “I think it is a good indication of the competitiveness of our schedule and our team. Our student-athletes should be proud of this accomplishment, but not satisfied, because I think we can still improve by the end of the season.”
This marks the first time since its memorable 2005 season that Lehigh has been regionally ranked. The Mountain Hawks finished that season with a 14-2-2 record, 6-1-0 in Patriot League play. That year also marked the last time Lehigh has hosted the Patriot League Tournament, which the 2010 squad is vying to do this season. With three league games remaining, Lehigh currently stands in position to claim at least a share of the regular season title, while also hosting the league tournament due to its Oct. 10 win over Bucknell.
The Mountain Hawks are one of two Patriot League teams regionally-ranked along with Army. Overall, they've faced four of the top seven teams in the Mid-Atlantic Rankings: Dayton (2), Columbia (3), Princeton (5) and Army (7). Lehigh has been close in every game this season; all three of its losses have been by a single-goal, with two ending in overtime. Its 1-0 defeat at Princeton last Wednesday was actually its first regulation loss of the year.
Lambinus saw two more of his players honored on Monday as junior Genna Pepe was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week while freshman Paige Dyrek earned Rookie of the Week. They became Lehigh's eighth and ninth different players to earn a weekly award this season.
The Mountain Hawks close the regular season with four straight road games, beginning with a pair at Navy (Friday) and American (Sunday) this weekend.
