Lehigh tripped up at American

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Lehigh volleyball team fell in straight sets to Patriot League leader American on Saturday afternoon at Bender Arena. Sophomore Taylor Poole recorded six kills and hit .312 for the match, while freshman Courtney McCutchan tallied six kills and seven digs. Lehigh drops to 9-10 overall and 3-4 in league play.
“American played a very clean game, they are definitely a very dominant team,” Lehigh head coach Jenny Maurer said. “We were up 17-16 in the first set and we gave up a 9-3 run. That's been the story of our season in terms of inconsistency. We were playing well and controlling the game, but give credit to American.”
“We would have liked to have played better on our side of the court,” Maurer explained. “In the first set, we were hitting shots and executing. Our setters were isolating and we were doing a good job shutting down one of their outside attackers. On the weekend, Navy was a nice win for us and this certainly wasn't a bad loss, either.”
Juniors Angelika Kopacz and Brittany Reichwein each tallied five kills, while freshman Rachel Charles led the Brown and White with nine digs. Freshman Amanda Clark posted four blocks and junior Jessica Kudirka racked up a team-best 15 assists.
Juliana Crum had 14 kills for American and Magdalena Tekiel posted 10 kills to go along with a .625 hitting percentage. The Eagles hit .337 as a team, receiving strong hitting performances from Bianca Richardson (.353), Crum (.345) and Cassandra Ricketts (.308).
The Mountain Hawks will open a three-match homestand next week when Holy Cross visits Leeman-Turner Arena on Friday at 7 p.m. and Army comes to town the following day at 4 p.m.
