HAMDEN, Conn. – Lehigh posted its third consecutive victory on Sunday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks returned to the road and beat Quinnipiac 2-0 at Quinnipiac Soccer Field. Senior Natalie Hojnacki and sophomore Jana Basubas netted first half goals for the Mountain Hawks and the Lehigh defense pitched its third shutout of the season. The Mountain Hawks are now unbeaten in their last four games as they improve to 4-1-1 on the season.
The Mountain Hawks dominated the game statistically with a 21-11 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. After controlling the play through the first half hour Lehigh finally broke through in the 32nd minute when Hojnacki took a pass from junior Glynn Fitzer and fired a shot over Kendra Margulies for her second goal of the season.
It took just four minutes for Lehigh to extend the lead to 2-0. Following a Mountain Hawk corner kick a shot by sophomore Megan Cain was blocked, but Basubas collected the rebound and put a low shot past Margulies for her first goal of the season. After 45 minutes Lehigh outshot Quinnipiac 13-6 and led 2-0.
“We didn’t come out with a ton of energy but we still managed to get into a rhythm,” said Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “We had the better of the possession and created some good opportunities at goal that we were able to capitalize on.”
In the second half Lehigh held the Bobcats to just five shots, while junior goalkeeper Lauren Mains finished with five saves on the day to post her third clean sheet of the season.
Hojnacki fired a team-high five shots for Lehigh, while Furtuna Velaj led all players with six shots for the Bobcats.
Margulies finished with 13 saves for Quinnipiac, which falls to 1-2 with the loss.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pitch on Friday when they return home to face Virginia Commonwealth. Game time is set for 4 p.m. from the Ulrich Sports Complex.
