Men finish 4th, women 6th at PL Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Lehigh wrapped up competition at the Patriot League Championships with five more school records falling Saturday at Bucknell’s Kinney Natatorium. Senior Dan Johnson and junior Kevin McGrath each set new records to lead the men, who finished fourth with 357.5 points, while senior Melanie Rolish broke her own school record in the 200 yard breaststroke to help lead the women to a sixth place finish with 262.5 points.
McGrath posted the top finish of the championships for the Mountain Hawks as he tied for second in the men’s 200 breaststroke with a school-record time of 2:03.26. Johnson added his third school record in as many days as he posted a time of 44.51 seconds in the 100 freestyle, which was good for third place.
In the final event of the championships, Lehigh’s 400 free relay team consisting of Johnson, sophomore Andrew DiPietro and juniors Ben Dearden and Ryan Guttormsen smashed the school record with their time of 3:02.93, which was good for fourth place.
In other men’s action, freshman Chris Toth placed fifth in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 15:55.46, while sophomore Billy Dunne won the B-final in the 200 back with a time of 1:50.56. DiPietro and senior Mike Harm placed 12th and 13th respectively in the same event, while Dearden placed 14th in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:53.72.
On the women’s side, Rolish provided the top individual women’s finish for Lehigh at the championships, placing fifth in the 200 breaststroke, with her time of 2:18.67 eclipsing her own school record by three-tenths of a second.
The 400 free relay team consisting of Priscilla Barletta, Allison Montane, Kristen Keenan and Paola Simon finished sixth, but their time of 3:32.93 broke a ten year old school record.
Lehigh placed three swimmers in the top-15 in the women’s 1650 freestyle, with sophomore Lauren Kindrick leading the way in ninth place with a time of 17:23.21. Junior Allison Rolish placed 10th, while freshman Jill Rann placed 15th.
Barletta led Lehigh in the 200 fly with an 11th place finish. She also placed 14th in the 200 backstroke, two spots behind classmate Alena Pollitt.
Junior Erin Tormey placed eighth in the women’s three-meter diving competition.
In the team race the Navy men cruised to their sixth straight league title, while the Colgate women held off Navy to claim their second straight championship.
The Mountain Hawks did not have an individual champion, but 12 school records were established at the three-day competition.
