BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team lost its first match of Patriot League play tonight 3-1 to Army. The Black Knights were able to win a back and forth first set to seize momentum in the match and Lehigh could not recover only winning the third set. With the loss the Mountain Hawks drop to 9-8 on the season and 2-1 league.
With the first set tied 22-22 the lead would change six times before Army was able to close out the set for a 29-27 win. The Mountain Hawks couldn’t get in a rhythm during the second set and the Black Knights went on to win 25-15.
“The first set was a dogfight,” head coach Jenny Maurer said. “In the second set we came out a little deflated and had to many unforced errors.”
Lehigh did not give up after going down 2-0, as it took an early 4-3 lead in the set and the Mountain Hawks would go on to win 25-22.
“It was gut check time going into the third set,” Maurer said. “We had to refocus on our side of the court and come out strong.”
The Black Knights built at 10-4 lead and never looked back, taking the final set 25-12 to close out match.
Sophomore Chelsea Sheridan led the attack as she finished the match with 7 kills and .500 hitting percentage. Classmate Angelika Kopacz contributed another double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs.
“Chelsea had a great match offensively for us,” Maurer said. But as whole we have to make sure we’re doing all the little things right because against a team like Army not doing the little things correctly will add up.”
After three league matches Lehigh has a lot to be positive about, but Maurer knows that every league match is going to be difficult and it will start tomorrow.
“The real test for us is how we bounce back tomorrow,” Maurer said. “Holy Cross finished eighth in the league last year and they are going to have something to prove. We can’t take any team for granted, all league matches are going to be a war.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they take on Holy Cross at 4 p.m. If you can’t make it out to Leeman-Turner Arena tomorrow make sure to check out the live broadcast at Lehighsports.com.
