BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh sophomore Lauren Mains has been named the Patriot League’s Goalkeeper of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday. Mains made the first two starts of her college career last weekend and delivered a pair of strong performances in net for the Mountain Hawks, including her first career solo shutout in Lehigh’s 1-0 blanking of Albany on Sunday.
Mains played in every game for the Mountain Hawks in 2007 and won the outright No.1 goalkeeper job for Lehigh in preseason camp. Playing the full 90 minutes for the first time in her college career, Mains matched a career high with seven saves in a losing effort, as the Mountain Hawks fell 2-1 to Rutgers on Friday night. In Sunday’s win over the Great Danes, Mains made five saves, including a point-blank robbery of Diana Barrera’s breakaway attempt in the 87th minute. Junior Natalie Hojnacki delivered the game winning goal for the Mountain Hawks two minutes later.
Last season, Mains split time with Julie Kafka and amassed a record of 3-2-4 while playing over 880 minutes in goal. Mains allowed just eight goals and made 41 saves, while she and Kafka combined on seven shutouts in 2007.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action this weekend at the Davidson Tournament in North Carolina. Lehigh will open up against the host Wildcats Friday at 7 p.m. and will wrap-up the weekend against the College of Charleston Sunday at 1 p.m.
