BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Behind a strong second day performance, Lehigh climbed out of a fifth place tie and shot a 318 to finish third overall at the 2008 Patriot League Golf Championship, played on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club. Junior Will Robinson (78, 77, 84 = 239), sophomore Steve Suarez (82, 80, 78 = 240) and junior Shane Gilroy (83, 80, 78 = 241) each finished in the top-15 individually as the Mountain Hawks shot the third lowest score in Sunday’s final round, just one stroke behind Bucknell. Navy captured the 2008 championship with a team score of 925 (311, 307, 307) and the Midshipmen were followed by Bucknell (942), Lehigh (960), Holy Cross (962), Colgate (965), Army (969) and Lafayette (978).
Robinson shot a 239 to finish 11th overall for Lehigh, while Suarez was one stroke behind at 240, good for a 12th place tie. Gilroy shot a 241 over the course of the three-round tournament and finished in a tie for 14th place. Other Mountain Hawks that competed were Dwight Diorio who finished in a tie for 25th place after shooting a 249 (88, 80, 81), Chad Lubart who shot a 250 (82, 85, 83) and tied for 28th place and Duncan Zeiders who finished in a tie for 32nd place after shooting a 252 (87, 84, 81).
Navy’s Erich Schoen won the individual championship after shooting a 223 (74, 74, 75) and he was named the tournament MVP. Colgate’s Ricky Hayes took second place as he shot a 225 (76, 71, 78) and Navy’s Ben Hayes earned the Rookie of the Year award after shooting a 228 (78, 78, 72) to finish third overall and tops among all freshmen.
The Coach of the Year honor went to Navy’s Pat Owen after leading the Mids to the title and snapping Bucknell’s two-year reign as team champion.
