BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a weekend in which Lehigh wrapped up its season with an impressive 2-0 road win at Army, freshman midfielder Jana Basubas was named the Patriot League’s Rookie of the Week, the league announced on Monday. Basubas scored the second of Lehigh’s two goals as the Mountain Hawks wrapped up the 2008 season with their sixth shutout victory and prevented the Black Knights from laying claim to a piece of the Patriot League regular season championship.
Two minutes after junior Natalie Hojnacki put the Mountain Hawks in front Basubas netted her first goal of the season, scoring off a corner kick from senior Hailey Coonrad. The two Lehigh goals were the first yielded by the Black Knights in Patriot League play, and the Mountain Hawks defense took care of the rest in sending Army to its lone league loss of the regular season.
A native of Canyon Lake, California, Basubas was one of just two Mountain Hawks to start all 17 games this season. She finished in a tie for third on the team in scoring with three points. Basubas also ranked among the team leaders with 28 shots.
Also on Monday, Hojnacki earned an honorable mention from the league for her goal versus the Black Knights, which turned out to be the game-winner. Hojnacki’s 61st minute strike was her second goal of the season, with both tallies being game-winners.
The Mountain Hawks finished the season with a 6-10-1 record and a 2-5 Patriot League mark.
