Lehigh drops season opener to No. 15 Delaware

Lehigh got on the board in the second quarter when Dan Honeywell scored his first collegiate goal at the 14:49 mark off of an assist from Tom Allen. The Mountain Hawks then pulled to within a single goal when senior Michael Zurfluh netted his first score of the season at the 12:23 mark. Both Lehigh and
Lehigh was able to tie the game at three when senior Steve Marino netted his first goal of the season off of an assist from David Walsh at the 13:47 mark of the third quarter. Delaware answered with a score at the 11:45 mark to go in front one, but from there neither team was able to find the back of the net until the Fightin’ Blue Hens scored with only 41 ticks remaining in the quarter to send the game into the final 15 with the home team in front 5-3.
Havens-Zuder would open the fourth with his second goal of the afternoon at the 9:09 mark to make the score 6-3. Lehigh was unable to get into its rhythm on offense, until senior Alec Hooff scored an unassisted goal at the 4:36 mark to bring Lehigh to within two at 6-4. From there though, the Blue Hens would unleash a 3-0 run, keyed by two scored from Haven-Zuder.
Lehigh was out shot 51-29 on the afternoon and scooped up 25 ground balls, led by Spirko’s six. Spirko would also finish with 18 saves, while Scherr recorded 11 stops on the day. The Mountain Hawks were 15-of-21 in clear opportunities, but only 5-of-18 in face offs. Neither team was able to take advantage of extra man opportunities, as they combined to go 0-for-8.
Lehigh returns to action on Saturday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks open up their 2007 home schedule, welcoming the No. 17 Drexel Dragons to the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is set for 2:30 and all of the action will be broadcast live on lehighsports.com.
