Lehigh tips off season on Saturday at Cornell

Lehigh ushers in the Brett Reed era on Saturday evening as the Mountain Hawks hit the hardwood for the 2007-08 season opener in Ithaca versus the Cornell Big Red.  Lehigh is led by the 2007 Patriot League Rookie of the Year Marquis Hall, who averaged nearly 11 points per game last season and scored the third most points ever by a Lehigh freshman.  Hall is one of seven letterwinners who return for a young, but talented Mountain Hawks squad.  Cornell meanwhile is the popular pick among prognosticators to win this year’s Ivy League crown as the Big Red return eight of their top ten scorers from a year ago, including the last two Ivy League Rookies of the Year.  These two teams met last season in Bethlehem and it was Lehigh running away with a 90-71 victory at Stabler Arena.

 

Lehigh always likes to play tough, hard-nosed defense and the numbers prove that when the Mountain Hawks do, they are successful.  In its last 150 games, Lehigh is 49-14 when holding opponents to fewer than 60 points.  That mark includes a record of 7-3 last season.

 

While Lehigh has always relied on its defense to win games, last year the Mountain Hawks “O” showed signs that it can be just as potent.  Lehigh ranked in the top-three in the Patriot League in scoring offense for the first time in the last five years.  The Mountain Hawks also scored 90 or more points in three games for the first time since 1991-92.

 

Saturday’s tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm from Newman Arena in Ithaca, New York.  The game can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 as well as Lehighsports.com with coverage getting underway at 6:30.  Steve Degler will call the action.
