BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh’s hopes at a fourth straight Patriot League tournament berth came to an end on Saturday night as the Mountain Hawks played Army to a 0-0 draw at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks needed a victory to remain alive in the hunt for the tournament, but were held off the scoreboard, while the tie was sufficient to clinch a tournament berth for the Black Knights, who are now 7-6-2 overall and 3-1-2 in the Patriot League. Lehigh’s season comes to an end at 7-7-4 overall, 2-3-2 in league games.

“We knew coming into tonight what we needed to do,” said Lehigh head coach Manny Oudin. “We made the push, and came out with a lot of energy, but it just didn’t happen for us tonight.”

The Mountain Hawks’ best chances game early in the first half. Seniors Jen Fetsick and Melissa Montalvo had chances within the first ten minutes of the game, but Army keeper Alex Lostetter stifled the Lehigh attack with two of her nine saves on the night. Lehigh ended the first half with a 10-2 advantage in shots.

Army began the second half strong creating several scoring opportunities. The Black Knights best chance came in the 53rd minute when Kelley Robbins’ shot was blocked and cleared off the goal line by senior Michaela Pawlewicz.

In the 20 minutes of overtime the Black Knights out shot Lehigh 3-1 and we’re able to focus on keeping Lehigh off the scoreboard knowing that a draw would earn Army a spot in the tournament.

For the game, Lehigh out shot Army 16-9, while corner kicks were even at two. Lehigh’s goalkeeping tandem of junior Julie Kafka and freshman Lauren Mains were each credited with two saves on the night.

Army will be seeded third or fourth in next weekend’s Patriot League tournament, depending on the results of Monday’s makeup game at Navy.

Lehigh will miss out on the Patriot League tournament for the first time since 2003. The Mountain Hawks will lose one of their most successful senior classes, a group of seven who were recognized prior to Saturday night’s game.
