Lehigh men win big; women fall to rival Lafayette

“On the women’s side, we take the loss knowing that we swam well,” said Lehigh head coach Rob Herb. Our ladies all swam faster than we had all season. We were close but they seemed to win all the races to the wall. The guys knew what they had to do and got the job done by winning their races.”
Junior Dan Johnson swept the sprint freestyle events, winning the 50 free in 21.53 seconds, the 100 free in 47.37 and the 200 in 1:44.98. Lehigh swept the 200 free with freshman Andrew DiPietro and sophomore Ben Dearden taking second and third. Dearden added an impressive finish in the 100 fly, winning in 52.55 seconds.
Sophomore Kevin McGrath also won three events, taking the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke events, and the 400 yard IM. McGrath led top-three Lehigh sweeps in both breaststroke events.
Senior Jon Kearney won two individual events taking the 200 fly in 1:56.73 and the 500 free as well.
Other men’s event winners for the Mountain Hawks included senior Dan Bennett, who took the 1000 free in 10:26.28 and freshman Billy Dunne who won the 200 backstroke. Dunne also teamed with McGrath,
On the diving board, Lehigh swept both men’s and women’s events. Senior Clark Cohen took the men’s one meter with a score of 292.27, and the three meter with 292.87 points. On the women’s side, sophomore Erin Tormey secured 18 team points taking the one meter with a score of 208.27 and the three meter with a score of 225.22.
Freshman Lauren Kindrick continued her strong showings in the distance events, winning both the 1000 and 500 free. Kindrick’s time of 10:38.55 was seven seconds better than sophomore Allison Rolish, who placed second in the event. Junior Melanie Rolish won Lehigh’s other three events, taking the 100 breast in 1:06.77, the 200 breast in 2:25.61 and the 400 IM in 4:39.43. Rolish led a Lehigh sweep of the IM, with Allison Rolish and senior Sherri Pickens finishing second and third.
The Mountain Hawks will now be off for nearly two months, as Lehigh moves into its winter training season. Lehigh will return to the pool at Marist on Saturday, January 12.
