BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh lost its first home match of the season Saturday afternoon, falling to Army 3-1, with game scores of 20-30, 31-29, 20-30 and 19-30. Shannon Spafford had a match high 18 kills and added 10 digs to record the double-double. Dannielle Pimental had a match high 22 digs to lead the Mountain Hawks on defense. The Brown and White are now 4-12 (1-4) while Army improves its record to 16-3 (4-1).
Despite the loss, head coach Jenny Maurer was very pleased with the way her team played.
“Our team is working through a lot of things right now, but I felt we played a great game and fought hard against a tough team,” said Maurer. “Right now were learning to play our game and not the other team’s game.”
After dropping the first game 20-30, Lehigh put together a great team effort in the second game to come away with the win, 31-29.
“We cut down on a lot of unforced errors while staying aggressive,” said Maurer of her team’s play in the second game. “That’s the balance that we are trying to get as a team.”
Army had four players in double digit kills led by Rachel Breinling with 16, while Elizabeth Lazzari had 15 kills and 11 digs to record the double-double. As a team Army hit .293 on the match compared to just .108 for the Mountain Hawks.
Lehigh returns to action on Friday, when it travels to Annapolis, Md. for a conference battle with Navy starting at 7 p.m.
