BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After scoring her third overtime game-winning goal of the season, Lehigh senior midfielder Christy Smith was recognized with her third Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week award of the season, it was announced Monday. Smith’s game-winner helped propel the Mountain Hawks past Colgate 3-2 on Saturday and qualified Lehigh for the Patriot League tournament as the No. 2 seed.

Smith matched her career high with a five point effort against the Raiders. The Downingtown, Pa. native opened the scoring ten minutes into the contest with her seventh goal of the season. She later helped give Lehigh a 2-1 lead as she picked up an assist when her drive was deflected in by junior Kara Zweizig.

In overtime, Smith almost single-handedly propelled Lehigh to victory, intercepting a pass and driving into the scoring circle to earn a penalty corner, then blasting home the game-winner off the corner to put Lehigh into the tournament for the third time in four years.

All three of Lehigh’s Patriot League wins were by scores of 3-2. All three were also decided in overtime, with Smith scoring the game-winning goal in all three contests.

For the season, Smith ranks third on the Mountain Hawks in scoring with eight goals and five assists for 21 points.

Also on Monday, freshman goalkeeper Jessica Miller earned an Honorable Mention from the league. Miller totaled 24 saves in two games, including a career-high 14 in the overtime in over Colgate.

Lehigh (8-9, 3-2 Patriot League) will return to action on Friday when the Mountain Hawks will meet rival Lafayette in the Patriot League semifinals in Washington, D.C. The Mountain Hawks and Leopards will play in Friday’s second semifinal, beginning at 1:30 p.m., with Lehigh looking to avenge a 3-2 loss to the Leopards on October 6 in Easton. The other semifinal pits top-seed American against No. 4 Colgate, with that game beginning at 11 a.m. The Lehigh-Lafayette game will be broadcast online at Lehighsports.com with streaming audio powered by Yahoo!
