BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh senior Christy Smith have been named the Patriot League’s Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday. Smith netted the game winning goal in overtime to give the Mountain Hawks a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Bucknell in their Patriot League opener Saturday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex.

Despite holding a statistical advantage in shots and penalty corners, Lehigh trailed Bucknell 2-0 with just over six minutes left in regulation. After Lehigh scored twice to force overtime, the senior co-captain won the game in the 75th minute of play. Smith intercepted a clearance attempt from Bucknell defense, carried the ball into the scoring circle and around the drawn out Bucknell goalkeeper, before tucking a shot just inside the near post. The goal was the fourth of the season for Smith, and the second game-winning tally of her career.

A two-time All-League selection in field hockey, Christy Smith earned Offensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career. She was twice named Patriot League Rookie of the Week during the 2004 season.

Smith currently ranks third on the Mountain Hawks in scoring with four goals, one assist and nine points. She also leads all active Lehigh players with 18 career goals. With this week’s recognition, Smith is the third Mountain Hawk to earn league weekly honors this season. Freshman goalkeeper Jessica Miller was named Rookie of the Week last week, while junior Kalynn Davies was named Offensive Player of the Week on September 10.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Easton to take on arch rival Lafayette. Game time is set for 1 p.m. from Rappolt Field.
