Lehigh can't overcome slow start, falls to Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Freshman Marquis Hall scored a career-high 21 points on eight-of-nine shooting but it wasn’t enough as Lehigh fell to Army 64-59 on Saturday afternoon at Christl Arena.  Sophomore Phil Anderson added 14 points on a perfect five-of-five shooting, but the Mountain Hawks could not overcome a 29 percent shooting performance in the first half as they fall to 7-12 overall and 2-1 in league play.  Jarell Brown led Army with 18 points on the afternoon, as the Black Knights improve to 11-7 overall and 1-2 in league action.

The loss marked the first-ever for Lehigh to Army under head coach Billy Taylor and just the second under its headman to a service academy (Navy, Army).  Lehigh turned the ball over 22 times for the game and had only eight assists on 22 field goals.  Junior Bryan White led the Mountain Hawks with eight rebounds, while freshman Zahir Carrington pulled down seven.

Marshall Jackson sank four three pointers en route to 14 points for the Black Knights, while Matt Bell and Cory Sinning added 11 tallies each.  Army turned the ball over just ten times, but shot only 31 percent from the field.  Corban Bates pulled down a team-best eight rebounds for Army, while Brown and Sinning each dished out three helpers.

Lehigh came out slow shooting only 29 percent in the first half, as only one Mountain Hawk made more than one field goal.  Hall led the Brown and White with seven points on two-of-three shooting, while senior Jose Olivero added five.  There were 23 total fouls called between the teams and 26 free throws shot, as the Black Knights took a 31-24 lead heading into halftime.  Lehigh out rebounded Army 20-17 in the half and forced the Black Knights into 33 percent shooting, which helped offset its own offensive struggles.  Brown led Army with nine points, while Bell and Cory Sinning each added eight.

In the second half, Army quickly built upon its lead, extending to a nine-point bulge with 11:35 to go on a three-point play by Marcus Nelson.  Lehigh made a run of its own as Hall hit a free throw, Hall and Anderson sank a pair of three-pointers and Hall dropped in another jumper to make the score 48-45 in favor of Army with 6:54 remaining.  The Black Knights responded however with a pair of three pointers, one by Jackson and another by Brown, which made it a nine-point game with 4:39 to go.  Lehigh would cut it to a three-point game with 53 ticks left on the clock, but Army hit its free throws and forced the Mountain Hawks into a number of turnovers and defended shots, which led the outcome.

Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday evening when the Mountain Hawks play host to the Colgate Raiders at Stabler Arena.  Tip-off is set for 7:05 and tickets can be purchased prior to the game at the arena box office.
