BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh fell to Bucknell 3-1 in its first match of the weekend on Friday night at the Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall as the Mountain Hawks keep searching for their first win of the season.  Game scores were 30-22, 22-30, 32-30 and 30-19.  Lehigh drops to 0-16 on the season and 0-3 in the Patriot League.  Meanwhile, Bucknell improves to 10-7 overall and 2-1 in league play.

“At crunch time, we need to step it up and not be afraid to make a mistake,” said head coach Amanda Moran.  “We should have won the third game.  We fought back and even had the lead.”

Leading the way for the Mountain Hawks was senior Michelle Schwendenmann who recorded her third consecutive double-double, having a match-high 20 kills and a total of 13 digs.  For Schwendenmann, it was also her fourth double-double of the season.

“Michelle is really stepping it up for us,” said Moran.  “She’s now playing in the front and back and serving.  Last year, we were not able to do that with her.  Late in the third game, I asked her if she wanted the ball.  Michelle said she wanted to put the ball down.  And she did.”

Additionally, Lehigh received helped from its young players, particularly freshmen Kristen Musbach, Mo McReynolds, Suzee Richter and Sarah Wolfe.  Musbach recorded a team-best .316 hitting percentage, while Richter added 10 kills for the team.  McReynolds and Wolfe helped out on defense, each coming up with 13 digs.  Wolfe also led the offense with 43 assists.

Bucknell was led by Shannon Pitsch, who paced the offense with a match-high 44 assists, and had three players tally 11 kills—Sarah Groman, Emilie Hardinge and Liz Hazuka.  Kristen Sydlowski anchored the defense, recording a match-high 32 digs.

Lehigh will return to action on Saturday afternoon when it takes on the Colgate Raiders at 4:00 pm at the Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
