Mountain Hawks win first game, ultimately fall

PHILADELPHIA – The Mountain Hawks started Saturday afternoon’s match against Iona College a bit differently than their previous two matches.  Lehigh won the first game 30-24, but could not capitalize as the Gaels took three-consecutive games en route to a 3-1 victory.  Iona won the final three games by scores of 30-24, 30-16 and 30-23.

“It was a good match,” said head coach Amanda Moran.  “We came out strong in the first game.  In the second and third games, we dug ourselves a hole and had to come from behind.  The last game was essentially point-for-point, and then we lost a couple of points on some service errors.”

Senior Michelle Schwendenmann had a team-high 11 kills en route to a .786 hitting percentage.  Senior Cassidy Maumus had a team-high 26 digs.  Both freshmen Sarah Wolfe and Brittany Thurston each recorded nine kills.  Wolfe also had an impressive .438 hitting percentage while Thurston had 14 defensive digs.  Thurston ended the tournament on a high note by being named to the all-tournament team.

Earlier in the day, the Mountain Hawks were defeated 3-0 as Cleveland State win the three games by scores of 30-17, 30-15 and 30-19.

Freshman Maxie McCoy had a team-high five kills while Schwendenmann and Thurston each recorded four.  Maumus led both teams in digs with 13.

Lehigh had to contend with a powerful attack from Cleveland State as three Vikings had double-digit kills.  Alexis Korovich led the way with a game-high 11 kills while Jenni Ramminger and Liz Fazio had 10 a piece.

Lehigh will return to action on Friday morning when it travels to the Buckeye Invitational at Ohio State University.  The Mountain Hawks will take on No. 23 Ohio State at 10:30 a.m. in the first game of the tournament.
