Lehigh, Temple to meet in opener once again

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With preseason camp now complete, the Mountain Hawks will officially open the 2006 season on Saturday when they visit Temple. Saturday’s contest marks the third straight year that Lehigh will open a campaign against the Owls. Each of the previous two seasons, the Brown and White dropped their season opener, but rebounded with strong seasons that culminated in back-to-back Patriot League Tournament berths.

Lehigh returns six starters from last year’s team, but will have to find a way to put the ball in the back of the cage, as more than two-thirds of last year’s goal production has been lost to graduation. The Mountain Hawks’ leading returning scorers are junior Christy Smith, who scored three goals and handed out a pair of assists; and senior Kelsey Smith, who added a goal and three assists in 2005.

Senior Moira Garrity and junior Marny Hearn will be counted upon to bring a veteran presence to the midfield, while the backline has a veteran core led by senior Mel Lepko and juniors Lauren Volpe, Terry Mongan, Stacy Sommerfield and Kelly Hansen.

Senior Stephanie Palmieri will step in as the Mountain Hawks’ starting goalkeeper. Palmieri started two games in the cage last year and stopped 30 shots.

Temple finished last season with an 11-10 season and qualified for the Atlantic 10 tournament, where the Owls were beaten in the semifinals. The Owls were picked second in the A-10 preseason poll and return 11 players from last year’s squad. Leading scorer Alli Lokey (eight goals, five assists, 21 points) is back for her junior season. Sophomore Erin Hanshue is the Owls’ top returning goalkeeper.

The Owls lead the all-time series 5-11-3 and have won two straight in the series, including a 5-1 triumph on opening day 2005. Lehigh’s last win was a 1-0 effort in 2003. Saturday’s game marks the fifth time in six seasons the Brown and White have opened their season against Temple.

Saturday’s game gets underway at 1:00 from Greasey Field in Philadelphia.
