BETHLEHEM, Pa. - As Lehigh continues preparations for the upcoming season the Mountain Hawks learned this week that they will enter a season regionally ranked for the first time in school history. The Mountain Hawks were ranked eighth in the Mid-Atlantic preseason poll from Soccer Buzz, an internet magazine devoted to women’s college soccer. This ranking comes on the heels of a record-setting 2005 campaign, in which Lehigh set school records for wins and shutouts and earned a share of the Patriot League regular season title.

The Brown and White earned their first ever regional rankings in September of 2005 and remained ranked throughout the season, rising as high as seventh, where the Mountain Hawks finished the season. Lehigh loses just two starters from that team and returns six All-Patriot League selections including the league’s Offensive Player of the Year, senior Gina Lewandowski; Defensive Player of the Year, junior Michaela Pawlewicz; and Co-Goalkeeper and Co-Rookie of the year, sophomore Julie Kafka.

Forty seven teams comprise the Mid-Atlantic region with Virginia taking top honors in the poll, which ranks the region’s top 15 sides. This season Lehigh has added a pair of teams to its schedule that enter this season regionally ranked. Ivy League foe Princeton comes in two spots ahead of the Mountain Hawks at No. 6, while Loyola (Md.) comes in at No. 11. In addition, Patriot League rivals Colgate and Army are ranked ninth and 14th respectively, in the Northeast region.

The Mountain Hawks will kick off the 2006 season on Friday August 25, when the Red Foxes of Marist visit the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is set for 7:00 pm with audio and video coverage online at lehighsports.com with streaming provided by Yahoo! Sports.
